FRS Scholarship

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) offers an annual college scholarship program to help further higher education among rural youth. FRS awards a one-time $2,500 scholarships to students from rural America for their first year of college, university or vocational-technical school. Each student is sponsored by an NTCA member company. FRS funds $2,000 of each scholarship, and the sponsoring company awards the remaining $500. The FRS College Scholarship Program seeks to encourage students to return to their rural communities upon completing their education.

The program empowers rural youth by giving them opportunities for higher education. Our hope is that these students return to rural America to enhance and enrich their rural community with education and experience.

The application for the FRS College Scholarship Program is available each October for the following year’s program. Applications must be postmarked to FRS by March 1st of each year and winners will be announced by May 1st of that year. Click Here to Download the Application

The Foundation for Rural Service is proud to offer additional scholarships funded by Manny and Leo Staurulakis, of JSI, in honor of their parents John and Chresanthe Staurulakis. The FRS Starulakis Family Scholarships will provide four $5,000 awards and will give preference to students with an interest in science, math, medicine, or engineering. Students with a focus in the sciences will be automatically considered for these new Staurulakis Family Scholarships.

In 2013, Telecom Management Services (TMS) along with the West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative generously donated $50,000 to FRS to increase its support of rural Youth to help meet their goals of continuing their education. One $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to one student who is a customer of Ardmore Telephone and/or West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative. In addition, one $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a customer of any NTCA member company.

Since 2015, FRS has proudly offered the Everett Kneece Scholarship in honor of the generous philanthropist with a passion for rural America. This prestigious scholarship provides one exceptional student each year with a $7,000 award and gives particular preference to students who express an interest in returning to rural America upon completing their education—a goal that Kneece stressed as critical for strengthening rural America.

In 2017, FRS started offering the Roger Alan Cox Scholarship.  Roger Cox served rural America and the rural telecommunications industry for his entire life, spending the last 27 years of his life at Atlantic Telephone Membership Corporation (ATMC) as an accounting supervisor, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager.  Roger dedicated his life to improving the lives of those who live in rural America and this scholarship honors Roger’s passion and endless drive to help ensure that rural Americans have access to the same technology and education as every other American.
